We had a great weekend! Our new friends, the Baker Family, took Joseph on Friday and gave Mike and I had the chance to celebrate our 5th Anniversary. Dinner was delicious and Joseph loves his new buddies.
This Memorial Day we went to Hamm, Luxembourg with the Bakers to visit the graves of General Patton and his men.
7,797 American men gave there lives in this area.
Times of sadness were shattered by the happy screems of our 2yr old yelling ‘Hey! Mommy, Turtle!” or “Daddy Water!” when Joseph discovered the fountains. There was crying too when he was taken away from the fountain.
Joseph also discovered a sun-dried worm which he named "Nake" (snake). Nake and about a dozen accidentally smooshed potato bugs came home with us in his pocket.
While walked though this incredible place, we remembered my Grandpa Bill who served in the Navy during WWII and Mike’s Uncle Mike, who was an Army Ranger in the invasion of Normandy.
We also remembered our family who are serving today. My Cousin Eric, who is currently deployed with the United States Army. Mike’s Cousin Bradley, who is preparing for pilot school with the US Navy.
After visiting the cemetery, we went to the city of Luxembourg and had a picnic on one of the fortress walls. The walls have stood since Roman times and are very over-grown. They aren’t just HUGE, they are bigger than life. We actually thought we were on a wooded mountain side until we realized the mountain was man made.
Going to Luxembourg held special meaning for Mike. His Uncle volunteered for the Army’s 5th Rangers in Word War II and landed on Omaha Beach with the first wave of Allied troops. C-Company then went from Vierville, through Belgium, and onto Luxembourg, where they regrouped, retrained, and rebuilt. It is astonishing to consider what these men did for us.
Today’s blog is dedicated to Uncle Mike, Grandpa Bill, and our family who are currently serving. Thank you Eric and Brad! Happy Memorial Day!
